To Hamdeok beach instead of the classroom... An immersive project introducing Stanford d.school methodology. Like astronauts exploring an alien planet, students roamed the streets of Hamdeok, Jeju, creating messages to send to space using AI.
On November 28, 2025, Cheju Halla University RISE Project successfully completed the space·AI fusion program 'Launch Party: Crafting Jeju's Platinum Record' at Island Worklab Hamdeok. This event attracted attention as 'festival-like education' beyond simple practice, with Stanford d.school faculty directly conducting education and applying design thinking methodology.
The 'Golden Record' that traveled to space aboard Voyager 1 in 1977 contained human civilization. Students paid homage to this by creating their own 'Platinum Record' under the question, "What would it look like if we sent Jeju's story from 2025 to space?"
In this process, they used generative AI to materialize messages through text, images, and sound, fusing technology with humanistic imagination.
Instead of sitting in the classroom, students performed 'Micro Missions' inspired by astronaut training. They visited local shops in Hamdeok and used 'Tamna-jeon' (local currency) directly, observing the flow of the local economy.
The process of exploring an unfamiliar environment (Jeju local) and solving problems based on observed data resembles the actual process of performing space missions.
The program proceeded as a 4-stage immersive course where students ran with their feet and created with their hands.
Exploring local shops and streets of Hamdeok, collecting perspectives from local residents and experiencing local culture
Visualizing collected experiences and creating original concept art by team
Under the mission “Transmit this experience to Mars base,” creating creative messages using generative AI
Finale with a networking party presenting and sharing results
Young Joon Lee, Head of Core Talent Development Division at Cheju Halla University, stated, “It was very impressive to see students define problems themselves and unfold the grand themes of AI and space into local stories,” and “We will expand innovative educational models where schools and industry cooperate so that students can develop practical capabilities at the intersection of local communities and new industries.”
